Reading Notes Week 7: RSS Feeds & Blogs

26Feb10

This week for class we were to read A Survival Guide to Social Media & Web 2.0 Optimization Ch 3. On RSS Feeds & Blogs. This chapter actually taught me a lot because I did not know too much about what an RSS was, and I am always looking for more tips and information on blogging.

  • RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, they are ways of sharing information across the internet. The book used this description to describe what an RSS feed is: Thinking of a feed as a subscription, instead of getting your local paper delivered to your door every day, your paper is delivered to your desktop.
  • A blog is an RSS Feed, each blogging platform have built-in RSS feed technology, each blog post becomes part of the blog’s RSS feed. As I blogger I found that to be an interesting point.
  • The chapter also described how you can create your own feed: 1. Create your own XML File, 2. Use software or a service to create your feed, 3. Use a CMS to serve as your feed, and 4. Start a blog to serve as your feed.

Feeds are a good way of getting a buzz out about whats going on, but with that it is important to monitor and keep your blog clean!
