T.O.W Week 6: Social Media, Friend or Foe?

17Feb10

This week for the Topic of the Week we were asked to listen to “Social Media: friend or foe,” discussed by Shel Holtz, Mark Ragan and other discuss  “concerns and objections around the adoption of social media communication channel.”

I posted some interestings questions and answers the speakers and audience members had:

  • Why do I need to launch a blog? : Shel Holtz, commented that if our customers are carrying enough to comment on our product, we should care enough about them to address their concerns, by using blogs. He said that social media is important for building relationships, and you have relationships with your customers, they become passionate about the product. I COMPLETELY agree with Holtz, when hearing this I literally shook my head, if a company has an opportunity to build a relationship with their customers, why not use it! It could only further your company.
  • Who is going to write these blog posts?: The answer to this question was the employees of the company can post blogs, along with the CEO! The employees would post about the great products and great services, and what they are doing.  These blog posts can be extremely valuable, and this is the way to make your company shine.
  • This sounds like Blogs gone wild, Where’s the control?: These conversations among cusomters and employees are taking place, and your company should want to tap into what is being said and what is going on with your company. Using blogs is your way to do just that!

Other points throughout the discussion were interesting as well:

  • Hotels have seen huge increase in number from customers clicking a blog link directly to reserve a room
  • WordPress’s CEO used 1 customers complaints, and completely renovated their site, and by listening to the customer the site was able to improved and recieved great feedback from customers.
  • With using social media like twitter, and facebook you will make your company the top company that students will want to join.

I think this discussions was extremely interesting. It was really cool to hear a CEO’s concerns about why blogging and social media is so necessary. The “CEO” brought up great questions that any newbie to social media would be conerned with. However, it was awesome to see how much of a difference social media and blogging does make on a company.  This discussion is so important because my generation is learning how to live with these social medias, and with companies utilizing these sites it will only bring a company closer together with employees and with their customers. I personally thing companies that are behind the curve and aren’t on twitter yet and aren’t blogging, and holding themselves back from being successful right now!

I thought it was great that this podcast highlighted the fact that high ranking company officials are actually concerned with social media and the impact that it can have. In a day in time where it seems that social media is ruling the universe, it’s important for companies to understand what is out there and how they can use it to their advantage. I honestly don’t believe that companies will actually suffer from not participating in the social media universe, but I guess it never hurts to try something new every once in a while either. I guess I’m still on the fence when it comes to the actual importance of social media in the business world.
